Home Speaker Wiring
When you decide to set up your home speaker wiring, whether it is for
surround sound or a set of speakers, you will want to use the best you can get for the money.
There are so many brands and types of wire that you may find it hard to choose.
Straight Wire, Monster Cable, Nordost, and Vampire Wire are just a few of the choices you have. Find one that resists RF interference if you
want your sound to be perfect.
If you need to run your wire very far to reach the receiver you will need a good type of wire so that the integrity of your sound is not
compromised by how far it is between the speakers and the receiver.
One good piece of advice about running the home speaker wiring, is to make it as easy on yourself as possible.
If you need it in a room that has carpet on the floor, you are going to be tackling a difficult job.
The best thing you could have done is to put the wiring in before the carpet was laid.
However barring that option, there are tools that you can get to make it easier.
Under carpet tape is one solution for laying out your wire under the carpet. You do have to
be careful because this can cause the padding to bunch up and you definitely do not want lumpy carpet. The best bet is to find another way.
The better idea is to run the wire through walls and ceilings to where you want it.
This is fairly simple to do. All it takes is a drill with a bit that is big enough for making the hole the home speaker wiring will go
through. Before drilling anywhere make sure you check it out to make sure you are not drilling through an electrical line or water pipes.
Home speaker wiring can be found in a variety of stores. Radio Shack carries various types of wire.
Electronic stores are good sources for the wire you need. When purchasing wire make sure you find one with a high code level.
This is especially important if you are running it behind walls or in an attic. Code level 3 is considered the best for this. This wire
normally costs about $.65 a foot and is fire retardant.
Another thing to remember is always cut your wire longer than you need it. This will keep you from having to splice the wire which is not
recommended. Putting in splices can cause you to pick up stray RF signals, totally mess up the sound from your system, and is considered
unsafe.
Follow guidelines from your sound system for wiring your home for speakers. If you are unsure of how to do this, it might be best to call in a
professional. After all, you want the best sound you can possible have.
